What is Your One Thing?

Brief Intro to Romans:

  • The Apostle Paul wrote Roman's, which was a letter to, you guessed it, the Romans.

  • The largest letter written by Paul, containing 16 chapters and a total of 433 verses.

  • Paul was writing to the church in Rome, which consisted of both Jewish and Gentile Christians.

  • The overarching main theme of the Book of Romans is the gospel of Jesus Christ and the revelation of God's righteousness through faith. It systematically explains how humanity's sinfulness is addressed by God's grace, leading to justification by faith for all who believe, and the implications of this salvation for how believers should live.

  • The theme of chapter 6, which will be the reference to today's post, is that believers are dead to sin and alive to God. This is another Biblical principle that can help you run your life in a way more appropriate for a follower of Christ.

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to Him as an instrument of righteousness. — Romans 6:11-13

What is your one thing? What is holding you back-stopping you from growing closer to God and preventing you from reaching your full potential?

Here is a list of possible "things" that you may be struggling with:

  • Giving into your anger.

  • Lustful thoughts.

  • Doubting God.

  • Spending too much time obsessing over things that distract you from God.

  • Not being able to forgive yourself or others.

  • Neglecting God.

  • Being overly anxious.

These and many more could be holding you back. I encourage you to reflect on your life and find one thing that is holding you back from God, and eliminate it. If it is avoidable, then avoid it. If it requires practice, then practice. Do whatever you have to do just quit the one thing and grow closer to God. Do these things also if you want to strengthen your relationship with God:

  • Pray to him.

  • Read His word.

  • Fast (what you are doing by giving up the one thing)

  • Journal.

By giving up one thing at a time, you will soon discover that you will be far better in the near future than you were when you started. I will quote Zeno here who helps make the point that small steps can result in significant change: "Well-being is realized by small steps, but is truly no small thing."
