How Do We Know God is Real?

At some point, most of us ask the question—even if we’re afraid to say it out loud: Is God really real?

Whether you’re scrolling through TikTok, sitting in a science class, or going through something hard, it’s easy to wonder if you’re just believing in something because you were raised that way—or if there’s something deeper going on. And guess what? God’s not intimidated by your questions. In fact, He welcomes them.

Here’s a look at some reasons—both biblical and practical—that point to the reality of God.

1. Creation Points to a Creator

When you step outside and look at the sky, feel the wind, or stare at the stars, have you ever wondered: How did all this get here?

Psalm 19:1 says:

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

Science itself shows that the universe had a beginning. And every beginning needs a cause. It’s hard to believe that the beauty, complexity, and order of the universe happened by chance. From the fine-tuning of Earth’s position to the DNA in your body—it all points to an intelligent Designer.

2. Morality Isn’t Random

Even across different cultures, most people agree on certain things: stealing is wrong, love is good, murder is evil. But where do those ideas come from?

Romans 2:15 talks about how God's law is written on our hearts. There’s a moral compass inside every human being—and it points to a moral Lawgiver.

If everything came from random matter and energy, where did concepts like right, wrong, justice, or sacrifice come from?

3. The Bible is Historically and Prophetically Reliable

The Bible isn’t a random religious book. It was written over 1,500 years by 40+ authors, on 3 continents, in 3 languages—and yet, it tells one cohesive story of redemption.

And the wildest part? It’s full of fulfilled prophecies. For example:

  • The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2)

  • His death described in detail centuries before crucifixion existed (Psalm 22, Isaiah 53)

  • The rise and fall of specific empires

The historical accuracy, preserved manuscripts, and archaeological discoveries continue to support what Scripture has been saying all along.

4. Jesus: The Most Compelling Evidence

If you want to know if God is real—look at Jesus.

He wasn’t just a good teacher. He claimed to be the Son of God, healed the sick, forgave sins, died on a Roman cross, and then rose from the dead. No one has had a greater impact on human history. And there were over 500 witnesses who saw Him after His resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3–8).

C.S. Lewis said it best: Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic, or Lord. But He can’t be “just a good guy.”

5. Personal Encounters Change Everything

It’s one thing to know about God. It’s another to know Him personally.

People all over the world—across generations, cultures, and languages—have experienced the transforming power of Jesus. Lives changed. Addictions broken. Peace in the middle of storms. Joy that doesn’t make sense.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says:

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new is here!”

You may not have had some dramatic moment. That’s okay. Even a quiet faith is real faith. But if you seek Him with an open heart, He promises you will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

6. Faith Is Not Blind

Christianity isn’t about checking your brain at the door. It’s about trusting in what you have seen to believe what you haven’t yet.

Hebrews 11:1 defines faith this way:

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Faith is built on reason, evidence, and experience. You can believe in God and think critically. In fact, real faith invites tough questions.

Final Thought

So—how do we know God is real?

Not by one single thing, but by many things converging: the order of creation, the pull of morality, the truth of Scripture, the person of Jesus, and the real experiences of people just like you.

If you’re still unsure, don’t stop seeking. Ask your questions. Read the Word. Talk to God—even if you’re not sure He’s there. He can handle your doubt, and He’s far more willing to reveal Himself than we often give Him credit for.

Keep asking. Keep knocking. Because the God who is real… is also very near.
