Scripture: “Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.” – Proverbs 22:29 (ESV)

This short but powerful proverb reveals a profound truth: excellence opens doors. It affirms that diligence, skill, and craftsmanship are not only noticed by others—but honored. More importantly, it tells us something about how God values work and how we, as believers, should approach everything we do.
Skillfulness Is a Form of Stewardship
Skill doesn’t develop by accident. It comes through persistence, discipline, learning, and practice. Whether you're an artist, teacher, mechanic, leader, or student, the skills you develop reflect your stewardship of the talents and opportunities God has given you.
The Bible is filled with men and women who were elevated because of their excellence. Joseph, though sold into slavery, rose to power in Egypt because of his wisdom and skill. Daniel, exiled in Babylon, found favor with kings because of his extraordinary competence and integrity. Even David, before he was king, was called to serve Saul because of his skill with music.
These stories show us that when you pursue excellence in what you do—not for praise, but as worship to God—you position yourself for influence.
Excellence Attracts Opportunity
The proverb says, “He will stand before kings.” In ancient times, standing before a king meant receiving favor, trust, and responsibility. Today, it may mean being invited into leadership, influence, or greater platforms where your work can impact more lives. It might mean promotions, open doors, or the ability to bless others through what you've built.
This is not about chasing fame—it’s about God elevating people of integrity and diligence to places where their light can shine brighter. When we work well, God is glorified. Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”
When we do our best, even in the unseen and mundane, God sees—and in time, others will too.
Excellence Is Not Perfection
It’s important to note that skillfulness doesn’t mean perfection. You don’t have to be flawless to be faithful. Excellence is about showing up with integrity, giving your best, and being willing to grow. It’s a journey, not a destination.
In our culture, it’s easy to confuse visibility with value. But Proverbs 22:29 teaches the opposite: before anyone “stands before kings,” they usually labor in quiet faithfulness, unseen by crowds but not unseen by God.
So whether your work is behind a counter, behind a desk, on a stage, or at home, do it with all your heart. Your diligence today might become your influence tomorrow.
Standing Before Kings Begins With Serving Faithfully
Many believers long to make a big impact—but overlook the small daily acts of faithfulness that build the character and skill required for true influence. The man in Proverbs 22:29 didn’t wake up one morning in the palace. He spent time sharpening his craft, taking responsibility, learning from mistakes, and being faithful with little.
If you want to stand before kings, start by serving faithfully where you are. Make your work an offering to God. Be known for excellence, not to impress people—but to reflect your Creator, who does all things with wisdom and care.
Reflection & Prayer
Are you being diligent with the gifts and responsibilities God has placed in your hands? Are you pursuing excellence, not to gain praise—but to honor the One who gave you breath?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the work You've entrusted to me. Help me to approach it with diligence and skill. Teach me to honor You in everything I do, no matter how big or small. Shape me into a person who reflects Your excellence. And if it is Your will, open doors of greater opportunity so I may use my gifts to serve others and glorify You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
