Scripture: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” – Genesis 2:15 (ESV)

Before sin entered the world, before the fall of man and the curse of toil, God gave Adam a job. Genesis 2:15 reveals a foundational truth: work is not a punishment—it is a divine purpose. God placed Adam in the garden of Eden “to work it and keep it.” These two responsibilities—cultivating and guarding—form the framework for biblical stewardship.
Work Is Sacred
This verse tells us that meaningful labor was part of God's perfect creation. Work existed before the curse; it was not a result of sin but a gift from God. This shifts our perspective. Whether you’re a teacher, engineer, builder, parent, or student—your work matters to God. It reflects His image in you. Just as He created and ordered the universe, we are called to create, cultivate, and bring order to the world around us.
Stewardship and Responsibility
The words “work” and “keep” also reveal the heart of stewardship. To work means to cultivate, to nurture growth. To keep means to guard, protect, and preserve. Adam was entrusted with creation—not to exploit it, but to steward it faithfully. This applies to more than just nature. We are called to tend to relationships, talents, time, and truth with the same intentionality.
God still calls His people to be caretakers—of our homes, communities, churches, and even our own hearts. This verse challenges us to take our roles seriously. We are not owners, but stewards of what God has given.
A Higher Calling
Genesis 2:15 reminds us that vocation is not just about a paycheck; it's about purpose. When we work with integrity, diligence, and faithfulness, we honor the God who made us. Our daily tasks—however ordinary—can become acts of worship when done for His glory.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for giving me purpose through work. Help me to see my responsibilities as a calling from You. Teach me to be a faithful steward of all You've entrusted to me. May I work with joy, excellence, and a heart that reflects Your image. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
